It's All About The... SCENT WORK

Let Them Sniff!

Let Them Sniff!

Let Them Sniff!

The simple act of allowing our Dogs to spend more time sniffing makes them more optimistic.
By allowing our Dogs more 'foraging' time, their welfare is greatly improved.

The act of sniffing for our Family Dogs is SUPER important and there are endless benefits!

Why Scent Work?

  • Unlocking Mental Sharpness
Scent work offers Dogs a powerful mental workout, keeping their minds sharp & fully engaged. By tapping into their natural instincts, it wards off boredom & reduces behavioural issues linked to frustration. For older Dogs, it can be a cognitive lifeline, slowing mental decline & boosting their overall well-being, all while bringing joy & purpose to their day
  • Low-Impact Physical Wellness
Scent work may appear effortless, but it offers a gentle, low-impact form of exercise, perfect for Dogs with mobility challenges or those on the mend from injuries. Beyond the physical benefits, this rewarding activity can also boost a Dogs mood by releasing endorphins, helping them to manage pain while keeping them engaged & active
  • Deepen Your Connection
Scent work is a shared adventure that builds trust & strengthens the bond between you & your Dog. It sharpens your ability to read their body language & offers a glimpse into their unique way of thinking. In turn, your Dog learns to work alongside you, viewing you as both a partner & a source of exciting, rewarding experiences
  • Build Confidence & Ease Anxiety
Each successful scent discovery boosts your Dogs confidence, empowering them with a sense of achievement. As they hone their skills, their newfound self-assurance can spill over into other areas of life, helping to reduce behaviours driven by fear or reactivity & promoting a calmer, more balanced demeanour

  • Fun & Enriching
Scent work is pure enjoyment for Dogs, tapping into their natural instincts & making use of their incredible sense of smell. This engaging activity not only brings them joy but also provides deep satisfaction & fulfilment as they embrace the challenge of finding hidden scents

Did You Know?

  • While us Humans have around 5 million scent receptors, our Dogs have up to 300 million scent receptors!
  • Sniffing tires our Dogs both mentally & physically! Just 10 minutes of sniffing has the same effect on our Dogs as a whole 60 minutes of walking!
  • With their super scent powers, our Dogs are able to pick up the aroma of a single teaspoon of sugar in a body of water the size of two Olympic swimming pools!
  • Our Dogs breathing rate at rest is around 15 breaths per minute. This increases to around 30 breaths while walking, up to 60 breaths while running & between 150-200 breaths per minute while sniffing!
This is why scent work is so tiring for our Dogs!

Mantrailing

Each person has a unique scent, made up of debris that falls off our body as we go about our every day life. It may contain skin cells, sweat, hormones & even bacteria, & as we move around, our scent billows from us & moves around in the air before settling & sticking in the environment.

By providing a Dog with an item contaminated with the scent of a specific person, they are able to follow a scent trail to locate that person!

This life saving skill is used by Search & Rescue teams, along with Police & Military forces all across the world!

However, trailing isn't just used by professionals for operational purposes - it's also a fun activity for anyone who simply wants to spend quality time with their Dog while tapping in to their natural instincts & exercising their mind!

All Dogs are worked individually to ensure space for those who may need it.

Scent Detection

Scent Detection is used around the world, both for working & Operational Dogs & as a fun sport for Family Dogs!

Our AMAZING Dogs have been used to search for Bombs, Drugs, Firearms, Cash, Contraband, Missing People & even Human Remains!
In more recent years, Dogs have also been trained for assistance purposes, from sniffing out Cancer cells right through to alerting their Guardians of an impending epileptic fit or even of a low blood sugar status!

This set of classes will provide you with the required coaching for you & your Dog to become an elite Sniffer Dog Team simply for fun!

Dogs who need space are more than welcome - but please let us know in advance so that we can make sure that the necessary provisions are in place.

Tracking

Tracking is the ability our Dogs have to detect, recognise & follow a specific scent of ground disturbance. Our Dogs are born with this skill & would use it for survival long before becoming domesticated. Humans have harnesses this for years & now we use tracking Dogs for lots of different operational purposes.

The Police use tracking to locate criminals & evidence
The Military use tracking to locate opposition & threats
Some Countries use it to track Poachers
We can even use tracking to locate lost Animals!

When tracking a Human, the Dogs are taught to follow track scent - which is the disturbance in the ground left by Human footprints.
We train the Dogs to keep their nose to the ground & to follow the whole track & not to simply rush to the end.
The Dogs are required to 'indicate' on any evidence (articles) dropped by the criminal & can even show us the exact route of travel that the criminal took!

All Dogs are worked individually to ensure space for those who may need it.
